The Saltwater Social Raw Bar is a Cape Breton based raw bar and seafood experience, built around family, hospitality, and a deep love of beautiful food.

Owned and operated by Thomas & Alixandrea Dowson The Saltwater Social brings a fresh, elevated approach to oysters, seafood, and memorable gatherings across Cape Breton.

The idea for The Saltwater Social was born, in part, through Alix’s experience operating Mira Riverfront Getaway, a collection of short-term rental properties known for their high standards, thoughtful guest experience, and connection to Cape Breton hospitality.

Through hosting visitors from near and far for the past 8 years, they began hearing a common theme: guests were coming to Cape Breton eager to experience local seafood, but often found it difficult to know where to find it, how to access it, or how to enjoy it in a way that felt special. That feedback became the spark for The Saltwater Social , a business designed to make fresh oysters, local seafood, and authentic Cape Breton hospitality more accessible, memorable, and elevated.

Meet The Team

Behind the scenes, Alix (left) helps shape the heart of the brand — from networking, marketing, social media, creative direction, and new ideas - to building relationships with clients, venues, and community partners. Her work helps guide the vision of The Saltwater Social and ensures every detail feels thoughtful, personal, and true to the business.

Thomas, co-owner and operator, leads the day-to-day service inside the food trailer and at events. After spending 12 years working in mining in Alberta, alongside Alix, Thomas brought that same work ethic, precision, and hands-on leadership into The Saltwater Social. With a natural passion for oysters, seafood, and hospitality, he is often the face guests meet first, shucking, serving, educating, and creating the relaxed but refined experience The Saltwater Social is known for.

Joining the team is Thomas’s sister, Krista, our culinary collaborator. Krista brings creativity, personality, discipline, and an exceptional eye for presentation to our event menus and seafood offerings. With a 20+ year career with the National Ballet of Canada, she understands the importance of detail, movement, beauty, and timing. Qualities that translate naturally into the way she approaches food and guest experiences. Krista works closely with Thomas on events and in the trailer, helping bring family recipes, thoughtful menu ideas, and beautifully presented seafood to life.

For Thomas and Krista, food has always been personal. Their passion for cooking, hosting, and creating memorable meals is deeply tied to family, tradition, and the joy of gathering around the table. The Saltwater Social is an extension of that and a way to share Cape Breton hospitality through oysters, seafood, and experiences that feel both elevated, yet genuine.

As Cape Breton’s only raw bar, The Saltwater Social is proud to offer something unique: locally inspired seafood experiences with a sense of place, a commitment to quality, and a family story at the center of it all. From oyster pop-ups and private raw bars, to curated seafood tastings and special events, every gathering is built with care, authenticity, and a love for bringing people together.
